Here’s one I am pretty damn proud of. 1983 Topps was a great design. A great clean looking card, one of only a few sets to use and inset picture on the front of the card. I like the colors as well a nice mixture of light blue and a purplish blue with plenty of white to balance it out. The inset picture is normally something I don’t like much. I don’t like the 1984 Topps design near as much as the 83 design. It had the inset picture as well but it was square along with square lettering and led to a very clunky looking card. In contrast, 1983 Topps is a smooth design. Another interesting thing about this set is that the mugshot picture varied on different cards; it would sometimes be on the left and sometimes be on the right.
I have used Soria as my model for many of the card designs because he is a Royal and will be a Royal for at least a little longer it appears. I knew Zack was on the way and didn’t use him, and there are plenty of nice pictures of Soria as well. He is also one of my favorite all-time Royals. I saw him in person when he had his really good stuff and it was one of the impressive things I have ever seen on a baseball field.
Overall, good pictures, good looking card and a really impressive result. Look for a complete “2010 Royals Roster” set for 1983 Topps like I did with the 1980 set.

The Chiefs beat the Rams today so as promised, here is a Chiefs set. 1985 Topps football by Topps is a very simple card, one of only a few black bordered cards. Not a great looking set but a nice clean look to the cards. One of the easiest sets I have re-created.
1993 Donruss was a great looking set; nice white border, simple design, nice pictures, full color team logo..so what was missing? How about a George Brett card?
The 1993 Donruss set contained a whopping 792 cards and 28 Kansas City Royals cards, but did not feature the Hall of Fame Royals legend. The set would have came out after the 1992 baseball season, admittingly a down season for Brett; he batted .285 with 7 homers and 61 RBIs, for Brett’s standards anyway. He even played the next season so I see no good reason Brett wasn’t in the set. Donruss even made a card of him the next year in 1994.
To try to rectify the situation I have made a custom card for George Brett for the 1993 Donruss set.

The missing George Brett 1993 Donruss card.

Drew Bledsoe 1981 Topps custom card
A few days ago I posted a 1981 Topps Matt Cassel, here is a 1981 Topps version of another quarterback. Drew Bledsoe was always one of my favorite football players. His likeness will appear on this site from time to time. I will make a few more football cards soon. If the Chiefs win on Sunday I will force myself to do a set of them and get them posted by Monday.
Three more from the set. Gordon goes up again here with the third basemen. Rest of the the outfielders to follow.
On this post I should talk a bit about pictures. I try to get pictures I like and think are cool. I also try to get odd pictures that are memorable. This criteria will suffer from lack of selection, especially on players like Chris Getz who are difficult to find cards of. This Chris Getz picture is great, I think all three of these are phenomenal pictures. I will pick my favorites from the set after they are all posted.
I posted the middle infielders as well as the first basemen today because I printed the cards today and are really happy with the way they look. I cut them to card size, 3.5” x 2.5”, and put them in my card album. They don’t have backs but I put them back to back in the binder so you don’t notice. All together I came up with 27 cards. The 27th being Manager Ned Yost because I wanted to keep the set in multiples of 9 so they would fit nicely in binder pages.
I printed them on a nice thick cardstock so they have the feel of a baseball card which I think really helps in the illusion of imagining it is a real set. I will get a couple more groups of cards up tomorrow to try to get the whole set on the site. That will push me to move on to the next set I make. I have made several templates including 92 Fleer, 84 Donruss, 81 Topps football, 71 Topps, 77 topps and couple years from the 60s too. I could easily make a set of any of designs.
I am not going to make Royals sets for each one. I imagine a whole Chiefs set can’t be far off. I also have a couple of my favorite players that will make an appearance soon. I will probably do a few “concept” sets as well. The one I have been thinking of doing is picking a card design and trying to make a set of all Royals Catchers or something along those lines.
I am going to make a concious effort to do cards other than Royals and Chiefs but I just won’t be too excited about making cards of Derek Jeter of some other hated player.
In fact: right now as the blog is only a few days old I am going to install a “NO YANKEES” policy. No Yankee custom cards will appear on this site unless it is something like a Yankee giving up Damon’s grand slam or Luis Gonzalez’s walk off hit in the world series. The first rule of custom card club is the Yankees suck!
