This is a tribute to 1984 Donruss, along with 1971 Topps, one of my favorite sets of all time. I did three of the Royals pitchers for now. This is probably a set I will finish out at some point. I figure I should do as many Greinke cards as I can while he is still wearing a Royals hat.

1980 Topps Royals First Basemen: Billy Butler, Kila Ka’aihue and Eric Hosmer Leave a comment
The Royals have potential to have a logjam at first base in the near future. Butler, Ka’aihue and Hosmer are the three closest right now. Here they are 1980 Topps style.
1981 Topps Matt Cassel custom card Leave a comment
1981 Topps was just a year I chose at random. I wanted to do a football card and since the Chiefs showed how valuable Matt Cassel is on Sunday in San Diego(31-0) I thought I would do a card of him.
1981 Topps is of course best known for being Joe Montana’s rookie card. Until I re-created the card, I never realized how intricate the design actually is. I especially like the way to Topps logo is integrated into the card design (see top right corner.) I can’t say I am too fond of the flagpole in the bottom left hand corner however. I think it might have worked better without that totally. Overall the card design has nice colors and has a nice clean look to it. I think the picture really fits well with the card design as well. As my first football card design, I am very pleased with it.
The ex-Royals 1971 set from 2009 Leave a comment
Last year I did a Kansas City Royals card set as well. I did 1971 Topps; my favorite card design of all time. Many of the players are already gone, some for the best, I’m looking at you Jose Guillen. It looks like I did 22 cards. Of those 22, 13 are gone. That leaves only 9 current players I did, keep in mind this was just last year I believe.
It seems you never know how bad some of your players are until they are gone, I’m looking at you Mike Jacobs. Ah, Mike Jacobs, one of three DH’s the Royals carried that year. Luckily Billy Butler learned to play first out of necessity. Of the former players there are a couple I really wish we had back. Either Miguel Olivo or John Buck would both be an improvement over Kendall offensively. David Dejesus of course is a player Royals fans will miss.
Here is a sampling of the 22 cards. I am going to post all the players that have since left. I will probably re-do the rest of the set to fit the current roster. I know everyone wants to see that Jesse Chavez card.
1980 Topps Royals: Catchers Leave a comment
Here is the Royals catchers for the 1980 set. It should be interesting to see what happens at catcher for the Royals after Kendall is done with the team in 2011. One of the many uncertain positions in KC. There is hope for the future.
Alex Gordon 1980 Topps 2 comments
I have decided to post a custom card on the blog to show what I’m working on. I am starting with Alex Gordon the hope of the Royals who has yet to give the Royals a lot of hope. Nonetheless, he may be one of the better players on a bad team. But I digress.
I have done the entire Royals team with the 1980 card design. This is just the first post of one. First of all let me just say to any card enthusiasts that I know; 1980 Topps had no sideways cards. Look how nice they may have been if they would have done it.
A note on the making of the cards: I use a template I make in Illustrator of an original card from the 1980 set. I vectorize all the graphics on the card and match all fonts as close as I can so I make them live. Once the template is made; I just crop a photo in Photoshop and drop it into the template. Once the first card is made the rest go really quickly.
A Fresh Start Leave a comment
This is the initial post on the “A Hair Off Square” blog. This blog is intended a jumping off point for several projects. It’s name comes from the title of a webcomic that will probably never happen. It is also an outlet for a project of mine where I make custom baseball/football cards because I am a nerd. If you need an example of what this is until I get a post with one try this: http://goosejoak.blogspot.com/
The picture is random, ignore it if you wish.
