Archive for the ‘Second Base’ Tag
Michael Young once again is closing in on 200 hits. He hasn’t reached that milestone since 2007, his fifth straight year at the time. In spring training this year the Rangers were trying to trade Young because they really didn’t have a spot for him. Come opening day he was in the lineup and the Rangers should be endlessly glad he was.
He has had what may be the best year of his already impressive career. He is currently just one RBI short of his career high and is tied for his career high in average at .331. His .331 is currently a couple points behind Adrian Gonzalez for the American League lead. He is an essential part of the team going to the playoffs. He has played three different positions on the team as well. He has been a DH about half the time this year and spent about the rest of his time at first, second and third base.
He is a cornerstone of the Rangers franchise and hopefully he can lead his team to a World Series title in 2011.

If my calculations are correct; 3 different players have worn the number 31 for the St. Joe Mustangs this year. Beyond that; all 3 have been second basemen. The current number 31 on the Mustangs is Shane Segovia who only has a couple games under his belt with the team. Ryan Richardson preceded him for a while and the first number 31 was Ryan Rush.

A lot of Royals stuff lately so it is time for a couple Just Fair cards to make an appearance. Here are a couple guys whose names have popped up in the sports section this week. Buster Posey got hurt in a home plate collision and may be done for the year. I chose to display him in a picture other than the collision. Wilson Valdez was the first position player to get a pitching win in a game in something like 20 years. I also chose him to not be pitching, maybe decisions like this will lead to this set having a little more of a timeless quality, probably not. One interesting thing is that this set has 2 Philadelphia Phillies second basemen in it and neither one of them is named Chase Utley. Ricky Romero is include by chance. Blue Jays get no love, they are in last but are just a couple games under .500.
Cookie Rojas wasn’t an original Royals but he joined them in their second season in 1970. He was a big part of those early teams too. He would go to four All-Star games as a Royals second baseman in the early 1970’s. He spent several years with the Phillies before going to Kansas City but played the best years of his career for the Royals. He would play second base right up until Frank White would take the position from him.
