According to @PaddyKC on twitter; Mike Moustakas is batting .378 over his last 30 games, if that isn’t worthy of a custom card today I don’t know what is. Over the last few games he has re-discovered his power as well.
On August 18th Moustakas was batting .195; On September 18th he is batting .252.
Last night the Royals won their 7th straight game by beating the White Sox 10-3. Mike Moustakas went 3-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and 3 runs. This is the 3rd straight game that Moustakas has pounded out 3 hits and 2 RBI! Over his last four games he is 10-16 with 3 HR, 7 RBI and 6 runs scored.
Its great to see Moustakas hitting well after struggling so much in the middle of the season. The power is good to see too but I was never worried about his power. Mike Moustakas has power, if he isn’t hitting home runs it doesn’t mean that power is gone. If he hits well the power numbers will come. I was concerned about his average hanging around the Mendoza line but I was never concerned about his one homer in his first about 275 at bats.
I did another 1971 Topps rookie stars card of a couple of the Royals guys here. This card is for the Mariners fans who are having a tough year. These two guys have been bright spots. Michael Pineda might even be the Rookie of the Year in the American League. It is tough this year but Pineda was dominant for much of the year.
So this is 2002 Topps. I just posted 2000 Topps yesterday and commented about the forgettable designs from this era. This card is really no exception. Once again it isn’t a bad design. I really like the banners, something about them seems to scream “national pasttime.” The word “Topps” appears twice on the face of the card just like the 2000 set; which is annoying and unnecessary. The gold border is overkill, not as bad as 1999 Topps but still a little much.
The picture border has an inner glow of black on it. This is similar to the 2003 set that was blue and had the inset picture. This is a pain when re-creating the cards but I will admit that it does add depth to the picture which is nice. Too many cards look flat. What makes this card badass is the picture of Joakim that I found for the set. I don’t know where I got it but it is a sweet picture. So often a picture can make or break a card. This one makes the card look much better.
The NFL season has begun and it is time to start my shift to football cards for the next few months. There will still be many baseball cards but NFL cards will start to be more steady in my posts. This Donovan McNabb card is my template for my cards for the new football season. I worked through several variations of this card and settled on this for now but it could very well change before I start doing a lot of them.
I like everything on the card except for the name and team blocks. I like the color scheme alright; I try to get away from too much red, white and blue but I was trying to take the NFL logo colors and use them. I like the stripes but I think the color behind the name and team may be a little much. I am not quite sold on the font for the name either, it is looking a little plain right now. I really like how the pinstripes turned out and I really like the NFL logo and how I incorperated the year into the logo for the card. I thought I would simply call the set “NFL 2011.” I think my little football with the position is good as well; it will probably stay. I will have all cards in the set be landscape for now. It should make for a little nicer football cards I hope.
I started with McNabb mainly because he is on a new team and it is always cool to see a players card on a new team. He couldn’t lead the Vikings to a win today but still managed to throw for all of 39 yards against the Chargers. As a Chiefs fan it is nice to see a performance worse than the 41-7 bitch-whipping I had to endure on this opening weekend. So McNabb gets card #1 for now but a couple things might change and make this card absolute; I’ll come back to the design tomorrow or Tuesday and finish it then.
1989 Topps is not a bad looking set. It is just cheapened by the mass overproduction of baseball cards during that period. No card in the 1989 Topps set is really worth anything. Even the top names like Cal Ripken, George Brett and Nolan Ryan fetch almost no value because there are so many of this set out there.
Something I often say about most cards produced from 1988 through 1992 is that they aren’t even worth the value of the paper they are printed on. Obviously this is an exaggeration but it gets the point across about these cards. 1989 Topps is not a bad looking set though. I like the simple “jersey” style of the team name and how the players name is incorporated. This picture of Joakim Soria is a typical fan shot. From above where the seats are but it looks nice. It is a strange picture but I thought it fit the card well. Overall I think this is a nice refreshing set to see new names in, I might have to do a few more Royals cards from this year because they would look pretty nifty.
When Manny Pina made his major league debut on August 3rd I posted this card. I said that Johnny G was next to get a major league debut card, I never thought it would only be 2 days later. Gio landed with a splash the same way Manny Pina did. He went 2-3 with a double for his first major league hit. He also drove in a run, stole a base and looked comfortable in the field. His scrappy Dustin Pedroia-like play is sure to win over Kansas City Royals fans. His call-up got a lot of momentum of late, so fans were really excited to see him in the lineup. It was great to see the infield of Hosmer-Giavotella-Escobar-Moustakas, that is a lot of young talent on one field.
Here is the first of a few “Season Highlights” cards I made for the 2011 Mustangs season. This one if for Kris Koerper who was serenaded on his birthday with the crowd singing to him led by Mustangs general manager Rick Muntean. Koerper responded by hitting an absolute bomb to left center field for a 3-run homer. It may not have been a big moment for the team and their playoff chances but it was one of those cool moments that I will certainly remember from 2011 at Phil Welch Stadium. If you are keeping track this makes 3 cards of Koerper in my 2011 set.
The Mustangs have won their first game of the NBC World Series in Wichita. They defeated the Plaza Tire Capahas 7-3 behind Jayson Huett’s strong start. Jordan Guida drove in 2 runs as the Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead early. They play again on Wednesday at 5pm with Adam Maddox making his first start since his no-hitter.
My Just Fair card series comes back to honor Ervin Santana who threw a no-hitter today against the Cleveland Indians. Another Angels pitcher who can be dominant. This team could be really dangerous in the playoffs.
