Custom Card of the Day: 1999 Topps Jair Jurrjens   Leave a comment

Jair Jurrjens 1999 Topps custom cardJair Jurrjens is leading the National League in both wins(12) and ERA(2.26) right now. Those are great numbers and should put him right in the running for the NL Cy Young award until Tim Lincecum starts to get hot. Jurrjens has been a huge reason why the Atlanta Braves are currently leading the NL wild card. It would be great to see Chipper Jones make the playoffs one last time. He will go down as a truely historic player so it would be good to see him on that kind of stage again.

Jurrjens gets the custom card of the day today simply because I don’t know who he is and don’t think I have seen him pitch. I am an AL guy so that hurts me seeing guys like this. Hopefully I will get to see him pitch in October.

2011 Topps Spring Training: Will Smith   Leave a comment

Will Smith 2011 ToppsWill Smith’s no-hitter on Tuesday made me dig out this card I made this spring training. At that time I really thought that either Everett Teaford or Will Smith were going to make the opening day roster.

History of Joakim Soria: 1971 Topps   4 comments

History Of Joakim Soria 1971 Topps custom card1971 Topps is an amazing set. I have consistently called it my favorite set design of all time. That still holds up today. It was really the first year Topps used action shots on their cards and they had some great action shots too. This particular card is from the very first set I ever did as custom cards. I did a set that year and didn’t do anything with it. I never had a site to post it on so it just got buried on my hard drive. I should post some of the cards from this set because many of the players are long, long gone. I can’t remember the exact time frame but I believe it was right around the time the Royals traded Mark Teahan which would put it at the end of the 2009 season I think. It would be roughly a year and a half before I would dig the set out and I haven’t changed a thing on them since I made them. I recently added the signature on top of Soria’s card to be true to the original design but the picture and design was done a couple years ago. This Soria is likely one of the first 5 cards I ever made.

History of Joakim Soria: 2002 Topps   1 comment

History Of Joakim Soria 2002 Topps custom cardThis was a tough one to re-create. It has an inset picture like 83-84 Topps, a very thin pinstripe around the baseball field shaped picture and name block, a two tone Topps logo, a rounded corner and a white glow around the edge of the picture. All this adds up to a difficult card to create. I cropped a picture that would have fit better on a sideways card to fit a portrait card. I think this makes the card really nice. You don’t see many cards cropped like this but I feel it really works. I think I will pull this template out and do a few cards with it because it looks so nice.

2011 Just Fair: Prince Fielder   Leave a comment

Brewers Prince Fielder Just Fair custom cardIt’s been way too long since I posted a “Just Fair” card. I chose Prince Fielder because I am locking him in as my winner in tonight’s home run derby. I’m thinking he’ll end up beating Robinson Cano in the finals and end up with about 26 home runs.

I will post another Just Fair card with my All-Star MVP pick tomorrow. Any guesses at the derby or All-Star MVP?

Custom Card of the Day: Rajon Rondo Jump Shot 2011-2012   Leave a comment

Rajon Rondo Jump Shot custom cardHere is another “Jump Shot” custom card. I wanted to do a second player to show the difference in the color schemes I would use on the cards. I struggled a bit with the Celtics secondary color, I didn’t want to use white because of the white pinstripe I have on the card, I settled on black instead. This will probably be the last “Jump Shot” custom card unless somebody had a request for another basketball card.

2011 Mustangs: Doug Shields   Leave a comment

2011 Mustangs Doug ShieldsWalks lose games. When the bullpen allows walks it is hard to win. The Mustangs fell to the Sedalia Bombers 9-6 and the Mustangs pitchers, including starter Adam Maddox gave out 8 free passes to first base. The Clarinda A’s also fell on Sunday so the Mustangs 6.5 game lead remains intact.

Custom Card of the Day: Shane Battier Jump Shot 2011-2012   1 comment

Shane Battier Jump Shot custom cardHere is another custom card request. I don’t dabble in basketball much so this was a little different. My goal was to not only design a basketball card but to finish the complete card in a half hour. This took about 35 minutes between doing the logos and everything. I like the way it turned out, it is a design I would tweak more but it works. I came up with a nonsense name for the card brand to give it a custom card feel, however dorky it is, it is what I came up with.

The card’s color scheme is obviously taken from the team’s logo. This would be consistent for the other cards if I were to do more, I will probably do one or two more just for fun and to explore the color schemes. I’m not sold on what I did with the name block on the bottom, It looks a little clunky to me but this is exactly why I tried to give myself a time frame for making the card design. Any suggestions for another NBA player to do?

1984 Donruss: Luke Hochevar custom card   3 comments

1984 Donruss Luke Hochevar custom cardI’m going to Kauffman Stadium today to see Luke Hochevar take on the Detroit Tigers. I’m hoping I see the best of Hochevar. It is still frustrating as a Royals fan that Hochevar is so inconsistent. He show flashes of being a number 2-3 in the rotation guy but other times looks like a borderline major league ballplayer. The most frustrating for me personally is when he pitches about 5 2/3 innings and hits a wall and can’t get an out. That is the time when really knowing how to pitch pays off; when your stuff starts to fail you.

Notes on the card: I am making this 1984 Donruss Royals set and I believe I have now posted 3 cards from it. My concept is to do an entirely powder blue picture set. I think this is the first one I have posted that is a sideways card. I think this design works really well in the landscape format. The original set didn’t have any landscape cards but I wanted to add them to my set. I think they look extremely good.

Histroy of Joakim Soria: 1966 Topps   Leave a comment

History Of Joakim Soria 1966 Topps custom card1966 Topps is not the most thrilling of cards. It is very plain and simple, which isn’t always bad. Topps has had a ton of memorable designs, this is not one of them. There just doesn’t seem to be anything really distinct about the card design. I’m not calling it bad, just boring.
