1983 Topps Royals: Aaron Crow and Joakim Soria   Leave a comment

1983 Topps Royals Aaron Crow1983 Topps Royals Joakim Soria

QUICK THOUGHTS: This Soria card has now been posted by me either 3 or 4 times so you may have seen it before. Aaron Crow is almost unrecognizable without a beard now. That is all.

Mike Moustakas 2011 Royals Futures Game custom card   Leave a comment

Royals Futures Game Mike MoustakasMany times I feel like I post things on my site too quickly and people don’t have a chance to find them. I like keeping up a high turnover on the site so there is something new hopefully almost every time a visitor comes to my site. Because of this I feel like some of my cards get overlooked.

I dug out this Mike Moustakas card to post today because lets face it, everything is about Mike Moustakas right now. I have done this a couple times so far I might make it a regular feature, call it “flashback” or “In Case You Missed It.”

This card of Moose is from the Royals futures game on April 2nd 2011 at Kauffman Stadium. I attended the game an was likely more excited for it than any Royals game in a very long time. I made a complete set to commemorate the game. It is another original design, I will re-post several of these in the coming weeks.

Mike Moustakas Major Legue Debut card   Leave a comment

Major League debut Mike Moustakas custom card

I whipped up this design a couple weeks ago for a local professional team named the St. Joe Mustangs and really enjoyed the design. I liked it so much that I decided I had to figure out a way to do something with the Royals in this design. I combined this design with an idea I had for my “2011 Just Fair” set. I thought about making a special parallel/short print type variation with a different picture of the player and their Major League debut on the front of the card. I saw the black line at the bottom of this card and the puzzle pieces really fell right into place.

So I made the set. The set consisted of 6 cards until tonight (Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy, Everett Teaford, Louis Coleman, Tim Collins and Aaron Crow) and those cards will get posted soon. I decided that the next player to make his Major League debut for the Kansas City Royals would be the launch of this little subset I came up with. It just so happened that it was Mike Moustakas.

For the record Moustakas went 1-3 with a broken bat single(Nick Scott reference not intended) and a walk and run. I predicted 1-3 with a double and a walk and a strikeout with an RBI. I was close.

This is an idea I am proud of and think I would like to continue, possibly for years. I would reserve these cards for only those who made their Major League debut for the Royals from now on. For instance, Lorenzo Cain would not fit in the set because he has logged time with the Brewers. If someone like Iriving Falu would happen to get called up to spell Alcides Escobar, he would get a card in this set. Over the next couple weeks I will occasionally slip one of these cards in as my Custom Card of the Day.

2011 Topps Mike Moustakas custom card   4 comments

Mike Moustakas 2011 ToppsRoyals top prospect Mike Moustakas got the call and will make his major league debut tonight in California. I have to be honest, I really thought that it would be September before Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer both were in the Kansas City lineup. I am happy, this adds excitement to the Royals who realistically haven’t been exciting for a very long time.

This card of Moustakas is from my spring training custom set. The call-up actually means that Mike Moustakas will have a real card in the Topps update set this year! That doesn’t come out until September-October but I can’t wait to try to pull a Hosmer or Moustakas rookie card out of the set.

Everybody is throwing out predictions for Moustakas’ first game, here is mine: 1-3 2B, RBI, 1 BB, 1K.

1983 Topps Royals: Melky Cabrera and Sean O’Sullivan   Leave a comment

1983 Topps Royals Melky Cabrera

1983 Topps Royals Sean O'Sullivan

Melky Cabrera just hit a 3-run home run, how many 3-run homers have the Royals had this year? I don’t know that they have had one. If they have it sure isn’t very many. Sean O’Sullivan is on here because he probably gave Melky a high-5 in the dugout afterwards.

1983 Topps Eric Hosmer custom card   2 comments

1983 Topps Royals Eric Hosmer custom cardAlright, this is my favorite card from my 1983 Topps tribute Royals set. I think it is a great shot of the hot young rookie for the Royals. Hosmer had his first career walk-off hit today so I figured it was only fitting to post this card. Hopefully this win will slingshot the Royals back into playing decent baseball again. Oh yeah, don’t look now but this was a 3rd consecutive really good outing for Joakim Soria. Please don’t rush to get him back to the closers role though, make sure he is comfortable before that happens.

36 Greatest Royals: Willie Wilson   Leave a comment

Royals Greats Willie WilsonSo Saturday was Willie Wilson bobblehead day at Kauffman Stadium. It was the 20th bobblehead give-away(I think.) Willie is a no-brainer for a list of the greatest Royals of all-time. If I were to make a ranked list I think he would likely fall 3rd only behind George Brett and Frank White. Wilson’s bobblhead was long deserving and I am glad that it is now out there.

I really don’t think there is much to say about Wilson’s credentials to be on this list. He was a Royals outfielder for a long time, he was really fast and a really good player. He played 15 seasons in Kansas City and 19 in his career. He was a .285 career hitter that included a 1982 American League batting title at .332. He had a staggering 668 stolen bases, 2 all-star game appearances and a gold glove. He was a big part of the Royals 2 World Series appearances as well.

1983 Topps custom card: Kanekoa Texeira and Bruce Chen   Leave a comment

Here are a couple more 1983 Topps cards. Kanekoa Texeira did pitch for the Royals this year but has since been sent to Omaha the claimed off waivers by the Yankees. I wish him the best of luck even though he is in the Yankees organization. It seems like months since Bruce Chen has pitched. He has been on the disabled list for a while now and the Royals are all of the sudden very thin in the rotation. Putting 3 of 5 of your starters on the disabled list will do that. Starting rotation was: Hochevar, Francis, Davies, Chen, O’Sullivan and now is Hochevar, Francis, Paulino, Duffy, Adcock/Mazzaro? The Royals had really good luck with injuries but now all of this has gone down and even worse than all of this shining prospect John Lamb has to have Tommy John surgery.

Bringing back 1983 Topps; the Royals edition, Matt Treanor & Luke Hochevar   Leave a comment

1983 Topps Royals Matt Treanor custom card1983 Topps Royals Luke Hochevar custom cardI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, now, 1983 is a really good looking set. With the inset mugshots they are difficult to re-create but they are well worth it. They just look so good when they are all put together. I posted a “History of Joakim Soria” version of 1983 Topps and promised more would be coming. Until now there hadn’t been any. After Alcides Escobar’s and Billy Butler’s heroics yesterday I decided it was time.

I chose Matt Treanor and Luke Hochevar to start the posting of the set pretty much randomly. I think Treanor’s card is my second favorite from the set. I completed the whole set all in one sitting last night. I made all 30 players to appear in a Kansas City Royals uniform so far in 2011. I couldn’t complete #31 Felipe Paulino because of a lack of pictures but was able to do everybody else. I am going to start posting these often to get the set out there. I really like them and will be posting a couple times a day with them probably. Look out for Eric Hosmer’s card it is absolutely badass, it is the best of the set. I’ll probably post cards according to who performs well during the game to make it interesting. If Hosmer knocks one out, look for his card to be up within about 15 minutes.
