Eric Hosmer made the most high profile major league debut for the Royals this season. It came in Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on May 8, 2011 against the Oakland Athletics. He went 0-2 with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts, one of which was a called third strike that clearly was a ball. He also stole a base in that game and started a nice double play as well.

Mike Moustakas Major Legue Debut card Leave a comment
I whipped up this design a couple weeks ago for a local professional team named the St. Joe Mustangs and really enjoyed the design. I liked it so much that I decided I had to figure out a way to do something with the Royals in this design. I combined this design with an idea I had for my “2011 Just Fair” set. I thought about making a special parallel/short print type variation with a different picture of the player and their Major League debut on the front of the card. I saw the black line at the bottom of this card and the puzzle pieces really fell right into place.
So I made the set. The set consisted of 6 cards until tonight (Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy, Everett Teaford, Louis Coleman, Tim Collins and Aaron Crow) and those cards will get posted soon. I decided that the next player to make his Major League debut for the Kansas City Royals would be the launch of this little subset I came up with. It just so happened that it was Mike Moustakas.
For the record Moustakas went 1-3 with a broken bat single(Nick Scott reference not intended) and a walk and run. I predicted 1-3 with a double and a walk and a strikeout with an RBI. I was close.
This is an idea I am proud of and think I would like to continue, possibly for years. I would reserve these cards for only those who made their Major League debut for the Royals from now on. For instance, Lorenzo Cain would not fit in the set because he has logged time with the Brewers. If someone like Iriving Falu would happen to get called up to spell Alcides Escobar, he would get a card in this set. Over the next couple weeks I will occasionally slip one of these cards in as my Custom Card of the Day.
2011 Topps Mike Moustakas custom card 4 comments
Royals top prospect Mike Moustakas got the call and will make his major league debut tonight in California. I have to be honest, I really thought that it would be September before Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer both were in the Kansas City lineup. I am happy, this adds excitement to the Royals who realistically haven’t been exciting for a very long time.
This card of Moustakas is from my spring training custom set. The call-up actually means that Mike Moustakas will have a real card in the Topps update set this year! That doesn’t come out until September-October but I can’t wait to try to pull a Hosmer or Moustakas rookie card out of the set.
Everybody is throwing out predictions for Moustakas’ first game, here is mine: 1-3 2B, RBI, 1 BB, 1K.
Custom Card of the Day: 1983 Topps Adam Dunn 7 comments
1983 Topps is a great design. The card on the left represents the actual colors for the Chicago White Sox cards of that year. I think it looks pretty bad. I know they were trying to create more color on the cards but it made it look ugly. So on the right is the card I picked the colors for. I think it is better, it may be bland but it at least matches the White Sox colors a little bit.
Adam Dunn in a way replaced my favorite active player. This season the Chicago White Sox signed Dunn as a free agent this off-season to pretty much fill a designated hitter roll. This role was vacated by Jim Thome before last season. Ozzie Guillen made a bad decision last year by thinking he could use several players in that role. I don’t think it worked well and the White Sox signed Dunn for this year. Thome is now a Minnesota Twin and is similar to the type of player Dunn is. Adam Dunn has yet to create the impact that Thome did for that team. I think Dunn will get hot sometime this year, likely when he plays the Royals a lot.
This is a White Sox card and you should visit CSD’s custom cards if you like the White Sox cards. There is also a lot of draft cards going up over there right now so be sure to go check out CSD’s.

Custom Card of the Day: 1993 Triple Play Matt Joyce Leave a comment
So Goose Joak mentioned this set on one of my posts a few days ago so I decided to bring the design back for a custom card of the day. I decided to chose the second trending player on Yahoo’s MLB site to be the subject of the card. It was Matt Joyce of the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Joyce was leading the league in hitting coming into Wednesday. Did you know that? I didn’t. Joyce is having a great year for the Rays and has been a big reason they are only a couple games out of first place in the toughest division in baseball.
I remember this card set, 1993 Triple Play being a big hit with me. Triple Play was a cheap alternative when cards were still cheap to buy. It was a nice looking set and it came out right around the time I started to get serious about collecting baseball cards. It is another black border which is starting to become a trend on my site, oh well, you like what you like I guess. I don’t think I had even thought about this set before Dave from Goose Joak mentioned it to me the other day. I’m glad he did, some cards seem to act as a time machine of sorts, this one did it for me.
Custom Card of the Day: Alex Gordon 1993 Donruss 2 comments
This is a card I made a while ago. I made it the same time I created the “missing link” George Brett card from the same set. This card was made simply because I thought the picture was great.
Quick thoughts on the Royals; They won today breaking a tough couple game losing streak where Soria was horrible. Billy Butler continues to hammer the ball and not get enough credit. Chris Getz gave a glimpse of what the Royals hope he can be, great defensively and use his speed at the plate. Alex Gordon looks to be growing into a comfort zone in the leadoff spot. I think Gordon in the leadoff spot could be really interesting for the rest of this season.
Custom Card of the Day: 1985 Topps Josh Hamilton, Just Fair Josh Hamilton 7 comments
Josh Hamilton is back! This guy really changes the way the Rangers lineup looks. I saw the Ranger play in Kansas City a couple weeks ago and both Hamilton and Cruz were hurt and their lineup was not near as scary. Both are back now and Hamilton will try to drive toward another MVP season. He has won one MVP even after being injured a month, why not do it again? He can flat out hit, he is at .339 in a small sampling of games but who know what he can do playing at the Ballpark at Arlington.
I wanted to do something different today so I went with a custom card of Hamilton and one of my Just Fair cards of Hamilton. Ironically both have black borders, not planned I promise. The custom card is not only an old design, it is a football design. This was 1985 Topps’ version of a football set. I posted a bunch of Kansas City Chiefs from this set a while back. I think it is interesting seeing the Rangers in both their blued and red uniforms side by side, they look like completely different teams.
