As a Royals fan it really hurts to say this; but I really like Justin Verlander. The guy is flat out dominant. He just posted his 21st win and could end up with about 24 before seasons end. He is a strikeout machine and pitches deep into games consistently. He throws right at 100 MPH fastball in the 1st inning and he throws 100 MPH fastballs in the 9th inning too. He has spectacular stamina and is on his way to a Cy Young Award this year.
I like doing 1982 Topps cards because it gives me a chance to ad players signatures to the cards. I usually find a nice clean signature and trace it onto the card in Illustrator. It isn’t the easiest task usually but I have been thoroughly thrilled with the results each time. The only thing I don’t like about these cards is the color scheme. I complained about 1983 Topps not matching team colors too but it just seems obvious to make a card with the colors of the team portrayed. That is why I made this variant with my color choices too.
Going to see big Jim tonight against the Royals, I have never seen Thome hit a homer in person so I’m hoping to see a big fly.
The Royals basically bought Matt Treanor from the Texas Rangers a couple days before the season began in 2011. Or so we thought; it turns out they just rented him. They sold him back today, both deals between the Royals and Rangers for Treanor this year were for cash. Either way Treanor was good for the Royals this year and it appears that Salvador Perez is here to stay now so there is now longer room for Treanor with the Royals.
The shame of this is that Treanor’s last play as a Royal was getting hammered in a collision at home plate in Cleveland. He was knocked out cold and put on the 7-day disabled list. He played in the Royals minor-league system but never made it back to Kansas City.
Mike Moustakas has finally started hitting at the big league level. After watching his batting average dwindle below .200 for way too long, he recently got hot and currently has a 12 game hitting streak. The more impressive streak in my opinion is a multi-hit game streak he had of 5 consecutive games. He still has a very modest .232 batting average right now but it is a good place to be after where he was only a couple weeks ago. You can see it in his swing as well. He still is popping out to the infielders way too much but he is getting good swings now, something that wasn’t happening a month ago.
A triumphant return! Jim Thome is once again an Indian. He left the team about 10 years ago and now he is back for what is likely to be his last month as a major league player ever. It would be great if Thome could somehow lead the team into the playoffs but it is highly unlikely. The Detroit Tigers are simply a better team.
Minnesota got to benefit from Thome’s 600th home run this year then they gave him to Cleveland where the Indians will benefit from the last games of his career. This is a great way to end Thome’s career.
Apologies for the something like four day hiatus from any new posts. A hurricane-style storm has left me scrambling in the dark for about 60 hours over the last few days.
So I wanted to post a 1984 Donruss card of Alex Gordon. Certain pictures really capture the look of 1984 Donruss and I think this card fits the bill. I really like this picture and how it looks on the great 1984 Donruss design. More from this set still to come.
Alright, I can’t hold out anymore. Billy Butler shall now be known as #CountryBreakfast. So get on twitter and write something about the Royals and tag it #CountryBreakfast.
The Chiefs put up a mighty 25-0 performance against the Buccaneers tonight. Only problem? They put up the 0 not the 25. Its only preseason but c’mon man, get on the board. Personally I would rather be beaten over the head with a plastic bat than watch preseason football; and I’m a huge football fan too. Preseason just sucks. Here is a Glenn Dorsey card.
Salvador Perez got a surprising call to the major leagues and made his debut on August 10, 2011 against the Tampa Bay Rays. The game might forever be known for what happened in the 9th inning but it really doesn’t matter all that much.
Perez collected his first major league hit in a 1-3 effort at the plate that included a sacrifice fly that resulted in his first career RBI. His biggest contribution came with the catcher’s gear on. He picked off two base runners wandering too far off base after pitches. One of which was the tying run on third base at the time. One was at first and one was at third base and it should also be mentioned that he narrowly missed a pick-off on second base as well.
